The History of the Château

A castrum of the Baux is mentioned in texts from the second half of the 10th century. The occupation of the Baux was then primarily military in nature.

In the Middle Ages, the House of Baux, stemming from powerful Provençal families, owned 79 towns and strongholds spread throughout Provence and the neighboring counties, known as the “Baussenque lands.”

At that time, the territory of the Baux gained a certain renown in literature and philosophy.

The court of the Baux became famous for its courtly festivities, where poets and troubadours would entertain the fair ladies and knights.

The Château must-sees

The donjon, the Sarassine and Paravelle towers, the troglodyte houses, the château chapel, the hare’s hole, the cistern, the oven house, the dovecotes, the lower halls, and the bailey all bear witness to a rich past.

Built on a cliffside across three levels, the fortress stands on a rocky spur, with walls carved directly from the limestone rock or leaning against the cliff face.
